On sound/sign and issues such as electronic music

Today, the human beings use the environment in creating a foundation in shaping his/her personality and identity. Spaces add up to form a village, town and, multiplying, cities. City is the common space shared by the different individuals with different perspectives. Just as the sum of the images belonging to this space form the principals of the social references, the sounds that they release and perceive determine the harmony of the common denominator (culture).

The sounds which belong to nature are moving further away from the lives of the people who live in cities. The city is producing its own sound. The progressing techniques, require radical manipulations in the processes of collecting, transforming and redistributing the sound. Each manipulated sound imposes a different feeling and information on a person. Today, this transformation that is mentioned is making revolutionary changes in musical expression. Musical harmony is being replaced by musical aesthetics, system and discipline.

Could the sounds of different emotions and spaces be displayed on a more democratic and universal platform in the circumstances of this period of rapid changes? Where would this platform carry the limits of music? To what extent can the audience adapt to the tones created on these new platforms?

The project, 'Sound/sign' displayed at the Independent Space for Contemporary Art at Dulcinea, evaluates the music created and arranged by using electronic tools and the virtual platform of the computer with the sound/sign approach.

The project consisted of two parts: In the first part, Mehmet Gün displayed his installation of sound and images, 'Mind Plantation', along with a performance and a lecture on June, 9th /15th. In the second part which took place on 17th/ 23rd of June, the young composer of electronic music, Sinan Bökesoy participated with a collaborative piece. These performances which also included visual imagery and Mahmut Yalay's upright bass performances were titled, 'Environment'.
