Stories/ Rebecca Lazier
(Dance performance)
25-26.6.1999 and 2-3.7.1999

In this performance, Rebecca Lazier reflected the experience of being in Turkey with her solo dance which she performed sometimes on a ladder or a bungie cord and sometimes barefoot, bringing together the stories of a new country and new people.

The performance dealt with themes such as losing, discovering, rebirth and the art of balance. The performance also combined eclectic live music and some visual images from Lazier's journey to South Eastern Anatolia.

The performance included a solo on a bungie chord titled, 'Wing Space', along with fragments of the trio, 'Yaren', in which Duygu Güngör and Yıldız Dinler participated. Both pieces were accompanied by the music of the Turkish composer, Behçet Mehmet Ateş. Ateş is a composer and musician residing in İstanbul who has worked with many musicians from different countries. After completing his college education in Germany, he went to graduate school at the University of Leeds, England, where he received his master's degree in philosophy. His musical background includes many countries from Far East to USA. Rebecca and Mehmet who had met in December created 3 collaborative projects within this period and this time they worked together on the 'creation myth'.

One of the solo pieces was a composition by Schubert, 'An die Musik', performed live by Price Waldman. Price is an actor and singer living in New York and at the moment working and touring with Laurie Anderson. His first singing experience was at the New York Metropoliten Opera's Children Choir. After graduating from Oberlin College, he went to graduate school at the University of Delaware and received his master's degree in Professional Theater Training. This performance was his first collaboration with Rebecca.

The performance began with the piece, 'The Balancing Act', which displayed the attempt to learn Turkish while trying to keep in balance on three ladders and continued towards a surprising ending full of dance and music, with the participation of Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory students.
