'To Nowhere' is the fourth solo exhibition of the artist who graduated from the painting and graphic design program of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Lahey, Holland.

In commenting about this exhibition, which mostly consists of oil painting diptychs, the artist mentions: "a constant nomadic state and the determining inner discussion she is experiencing on being settled down" and "the dominance of different life symbols she is sending off to the audience from the road".

The audience who is familiar with Gülfem Kessler's works from her previous solo exhibition in Turkey which took place at the Ayşe and Ercüment Kalmık Fondation, in 1997, were for this new exhibition exposed to the work displaying her futher developped skills and the mature state she has reached that enables her to add a sense of humor to her work which create an unusual effect and tension.

"My work always came out during unstable periods of my life. For me, it is much more difficult to paint during my settled periods. Sometimes I worry thinking that the creative dynamic of my life is dependant on "taking off"... The periods during which I don't paint or all the stages of my life before I had started painting are dead periods for me. Painting, for me, is healing but at the same time very embarrasing. When I enter my studio, I start expressing my life. I begin to question where I stand in life. I do all this in a very discrete way, by sending out some symbols and signs. I try to use general concepts, avoiding clear descriptions, so that I can hide underneath them."
